As Jesus’ ministry began to ramp up, He began to face more and more opposition from the people who knew, or who professed to know, the most about the Scriptures. These religious giants of their day seemed to be much more interested in finding faults with those who were not following God’s commands than practicing the foundational truths of the Bible. Michael warns us in today’s message to not learn the Bible simply to point out what is wrong, but rather to live what we read!

Michael’s message today gives us a clear picture of just how much Jesus was unappreciated by the religious leaders of His day. Not only did they dislike Him, but they challenged Him openly, and sought to end His influence, and eventually, His life. Of all people, the religious leaders should have been the ones praising Him and working to further His presence and following during His time on earth! If Jesus was so opposed, shouldn’t we also expect some criticism as we seek to be more like Jesus?

Today’s message looks at some of the unloved people of Jesus’ time – ok, they’re pretty unloved by today’s standards too! Jesus commits a social faux pas by inviting a tax collector to be His follower, and then eating a meal with him as well! The religious people of the day were critical of Jesus’ desire to be around sinners, but as Michael points out, that was the whole point of Jesus’ ministry! Jesus loved those who were unloved, those who had messed up, and still does, and simply asks us to do the same!

The way Jesus called His disciples was very unremarkable, yet very powerful: He said “Follow Me”, and they got up and followed Him! Michael makes an assertion today that Jesus is still calling people this way, and is calling us today, even as we listen to this message. Have you heard Him whispering to you? Have you felt nudged to dive a little deeper into His path for you? That stirring just might be Jesus saying “Follow Me”! The question now is, how will you respond?

As a fallen human race, with no chance of getting back to a perfect state of being, we are perplexed daily by difficulties, challenges, or as Michael puts it, conundrums. But what is at the root of all of these problems? Today’s message sheds light on that very issue and it all boils down to this: sin. Sin is in the world, and sin will always be in the world, and our interactions and daily living will always be tainted by it. But don’t worry – we have a grace-granting Father who has forgiven that sin and given us hope!

Michael begins his teaching today with this question: what does Jesus mean to you? As we have learned thus far working our way through the book of Luke, Jesus is somewhat of a mysterious hero to the people of His time. He performs miracles, teaches persuasively, and has quite the following already. But is that all there is to Him? As opposition to His ministry arises, will Jesus change in your eyes, as He did for many in the Bible? These are all things to consider as you listen today!

Surrendering all we are to God is difficult. It’s so much easier to go about life giving just a little to God, but giving everything? Every little detail and moment? That seems far too scary some days! Michael wants to encourage us today though, not to make us feel unworthy. God will ask for all of us, but we can do it! We can surrender it all to Him, and the benefits we will reap from this will be more than we could ever ask or imagine! Following God is anything but easy. This isn’t a new concept, but definitely one worth being reminded of! If we could simply go about life doing what we wanted, what was easiest, or what would be best for us, we’d have it all, wouldn’t we? But how rewarding would it actually be? In today’s message, Michael shares with us how rich and fulfilling life can be when we instead focus our pursuits and lives on God’s agenda, rather than our own. Again, it won’t be easy, but the rewards are pretty spectacular!

We are frequently faced with decisions in life – where to live, what career to pursue, which ministry is right. What yardstick do we measure these decisions by? Are we simply choosing the easy option, or the most rewarding? Michael challenges us today to examine what we are doing with our lives, to see if they are God-driven, and not us-driven. By focusing our time and energy on what God is calling us to, we will have a much greater impact, and come away from the experience more blessed than we could imagine!

Do you have a place you go to be alone with God? A closet, a room, anywhere? Michael today stresses the importance of having a “desolate place”, as he describes it. Jesus took time frequently from His ministry to get into isolation, and in that place, meet with God. This wasn’t just a tool in His ministry, nor is it simply an item to put on our checklist. This time of one on one with the Creator is essential to our lives! Ministry is made much easier when we take the time to rest in God’s presence!

The temptation to take the easy road is one of many that could present itself in the midst of ministry. Actually, it could and frequently does present itself in everyday life! Satan tends to use little things, like the promise of money, success, or recognition, to lure us into opening the door up to him. That little crack we allow him into, however, will just be the beginning. Michael reminds us today that when we allow Satan access to our lives, nothing good will ever come from it!

Michael’s message today is clear: as followers of Jesus, we have a great and unique calling. We have been so very blessed by God’s gift of grace and we are asked to share it with everyone we know, and everyone we come in contact with. Now, this may seem like a job only for those in the ministry, such as pastors or missionaries. However, Michael reminds us that our lives are to be a ministry – we influence everyone we meet, and if we are reflecting God’s characteristics, we will have a successful ministry!
